What is stored, and where
One key in localStorage
The first-hour checklist saves which steps you have ticked under a single key, asciilands-field-guide.progress.v1. It never leaves your browser, is not sent anywhere, and disappears if you clear site data.
Nothing else
No account, no cookie, no analytics script, no advertising, no third-party embed beyond the game itself, and no font request to Google — the two fonts are served from this domain.
What the game itself stores
The Play page loads the official client from asciilands.io in a frame. Inside that frame you are on the developer's site, under their terms and their storage, not ours. A guest character is anchored to the browser you created it in, which is why clearing site data can lose one.
Some browsers treat storage inside a cross-origin frame as third-party and block it. If a guest character does not persist after playing in the frame, that is the likely cause; opening the game in its own tab avoids it.
