Asciilands
Chapter 05Answers

Questions people ask before they start

Twelve answers, written to be useful rather than reassuring. Where the game's own documentation is the authority, it is linked instead of paraphrased into vagueness.

01

Is Asciilands free?

Yes. It is free to play in a browser, and donations are optional. There is no purchase and no paid tier — support goes to server hosting and, eventually, replacing placeholder art.

02

Do I need a Discord account to play?

No. You can play as a guest straight away, and guests can explore, craft, build in the wilderness and trade. A Discord account is what adds cross-device characters, friends, parties and towns.

Guests cannot found or join a town. That is the one piece of the game a guest cannot reach.

03

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Not usefully. Asciilands is built for desktop and laptop browsers and needs a keyboard, a mouse and WebGL. Mobile support is something the developer has said is next in line, not something that exists today.

04

Does my progress save?

Yes, automatically, on the server — for guests as well as Discord-linked characters. What differs is where the character is anchored: a guest character belongs to one browser.

Clearing site data or closing a private window can lose access to a guest character. The world itself persists either way.

05

Will there be wipes?

Possibly, since the game is in open beta. The developer's stated position is that any wipe would be as limited as possible — most likely builds and terrain rather than items.

06

Can I play with friends?

Yes, on the same shared world. Add friends by code in Social (N), then form a party of up to eight, or found a town together. Invitation links last 24 hours and are accepted in Social once you are in the world.

07

Which server should I pick?

There are two: Europe and North America. Pick the one nearer you. Both hold 110 players, and the login screen shows how full each is before you commit, including a queue when one is full.

08

What happens when I die?

You keep your inventory. Respawn puts you at your last rest point — even if that is in another region. If the campfire or camp you set it at has been destroyed, you go back to where you first started.

This is why setting a rest point early matters far more than building a house early.

09

Can I play alone?

Yes. Nothing in the game requires a town or a party. Towns matter for land protection, shared storage, upkeep-free buildings and player trade — all of which a solo player can simply do without, at the cost of your builds decaying outside town land.

10

Does the game tell me what to do?

There is an eleven-step tutorial and a Journal (J) of goals grouped by discipline. Some disciplines stay hidden until you discover them — smithing, magic, farming and discoveries all reveal themselves through play rather than being listed up front.

11

How current are the numbers on this site?

Every data page states the build it was checked against. Recipes, costs and timings were read from the live game and the in-game Field guide, not estimated. If the game has shipped a newer build, treat the newest numbers in-game as authoritative.

12

Is this an official site?

No. This is a fan project. The game and everything in it belong to its developer; the official site is asciilands.io, and that is the place to support them.
